I remember back in high school I had no idea where I would end up going to college. During my freshman and sophomore year, I was interested in Marine Biology and/or Architecture. However, Law and business were always in the back of my head. As it came time to apply to schools, I decided that a business education was what I wanted. I considered some state schools, some ivy’s and some others such as Georgetown. As a matter of fact, when I got early admission to Georgetown I was so positive that I would be attending college in DC.
But, when my NYU acceptance came in there was just a certain level of excitement that couldn’t compare. I applied last minute and couldn’t be happier that I did. Here are the three biggest things that make NYU different than any other school.
- The Opportunities – This one is such a big deal. People always talk about networking in college for your future career. Being in New York gives you direct access to some of the biggest and most influential companies and employers in whatever industry you may be interested in. Being in business, there really is no other place that compares to New York. Not to mention the amazing alumni that are always willing to lend a helping hand where they can. They understand what you’ve been through at NYU and know how hard you’ve worked!
- The Experience – It is definitely something that isn’t for everyone. The experience you will have here is completely different than a State school where the biggest thing on the weekends is the football game or things like that. You will be living in one of the busiest cities, but this also means that there is never a shortage of things to do! I think that being in this environment has really helped me find myself and has pushed me to mature more than I would have in a different college environment. Luckily enough, I still get out of the city and can attend football games up at West Point to get another college experience as well. I think the experience of living in New York is irreplaceable and think its something everyone should do at some point in their life. Doing so in college makes it a lot easier. On one hand, you’ll have an amazing community to rely on. Moving to the city alone could be intimidating and I assume it could be kind of hard to meet new people. But doing so with the help of NYU is much easier. Also, living in a dorm can be a lot easier than just trying to find an apartment your first year in the city. I am so glad that I knew the city experience was what I wanted! 3. THE CITY – You are literally living in one of the world’s most amazing cities. There’s a level of excitement that you just cant get anywhere else. There are so many times I catch myself getting off the subway or just looking out my window, and I have to take a step back and recognize just how blessed I am to be living here. When I was little, I dreamed of going to New York. I would have given anything to do the things that are now a part of my daily routine. Every season has its pros and cons, but they are all so magical. Seeing the first snowfall, the leaves change color in Central Park, the first cherry blossoms in the spring, they are all such unforgettable experiences.
Choosing NYU has brought me all of the dreams that I had a child, even ones that I would have never thought. I am living exactly where I want to, pursuing the career I always wanted, and I somehow fell in love along the way (lucky me right?).
So, for anyone considering college in NYC, looking at NYU, or even just thinking of living in NYC, do it. It will be hard at times but at the end of the day, you’ll be so thankful that you did. It has changed my life in ways I could only dream of.
