Growing up, I dreamed of living in New York. It’s really crazy to say that I have made all of my dreams come true here. Everyday I live out the life that I dreamt of as a child. The crazy thing is, that its so much better than I could have ever imagined. New York has brought me more than I would have ever known. The city will forever be a part of who I am. Every single day, the city leaves me in awe.
Seeing the skyline from 2,000 feet in the air was no exception. I was lucky enough to work with FlyNYON a few weeks ago. They offered Markus and I the opportunity to take a ride on one of their doors-off helicopter rides! We opted for the ‘Classic’ as it includes the flight over Central Park, a place that’s super special for us because we were there on our first date!
The hangar is in Kearny, NJ. We took the NJ Path train from the Oculus/WTC downtown. It probably took about 20/30 minutes then a short Uber ride to the facility. Upon entering, you can immediately feel the fun and upbeat culture of the company. They have couches, a kitchen, games such as corn hole and not to mention an actual helicopter just sitting there. They actually have a cool screen on the floor that shows you exactly what the city will look like from above!
We waited a little bit and then had to watch a short safety video. Then we headed back and got harnessed up. I do have to say that this is when I started to feel the nerves. We took a van for a few minutes over to the actual helicopters. Climbing onto it felt so cool, I’m not going to lie.
I really thought the takeoff was going to bad from what I’ve seen in movies and TV shows. But it was so
smooth. We lifted straight up and there we were. The view was immediately incredible. We flew over the Hudson and around the statue of liberty. The statue was one thing still on my NY bucket list, but what better view could I ask for now?
The ride then took us over the Brooklyn bridge. This was one of the first big turns we took. We had our feet out of the helicopter and it was if we were standing vertical! It was such a cool feeling. Markus was pretty freaked out, I’m more into the adrenaline stuff than he is!
Going over central park really reminded me how big the part is! It actually measures at about 843 acres of land! The flight then took us over midtown, we flew right over the empire state building! Markus and I actually went on a special date there too so it was a super moving moment.
Another highlight of the trip was going over the freedom tower. It is such an iconic part of New York, that seeing it beneath my feet was actually mind-blowing. Every time we see it on a TV intro or just some commercial, I remind everyone that our feet have been above it!
Overall, this is something that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. I am one of those people who enjoys adventure and thrilling things, but I can honestly say this wasn’t scary at all. Markus isn’t a huge fan of heights but even he admits to loving every second of it. It’s a feeling that you will not get from anything else.
Flying over the city that I always dreamed of as a child is an experience that I will never forget. It was another experience in the city that reminds me how lucky and blessed I am to be living the life that I do.
